Pre-K/Kindergarten Programs

The Cedars Pre-K and Kindergarten programs allow for a gentle introduction to the classroom for our youngest learners. This class will meet MWF from 8:30-12:00, with PreK students only attending Monday and Wednesday.

Children must turn five by August 1st to enroll in Kindergarten.

School Days

(Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays)

School days are designed around short lesson times, lots of picture books, plenty of time in our outdoor classroom, and a great deal of exploration. Students will be introduced to letter sounds and early reading, handwriting as students show fine-motor readiness, and number sense using manipulative of various kinds.

Some of the other activities these children will enjoy over the course of the year include:

  • Nursery rhymes and poetry
  • Folk songs, artist study, and scripture memorization from The Arts Cycle
  • Dress up and imaginative play
  • Nature walks in all weather while beginning to learn local birds and bird calls, trees, insects, and plants
  • Habits of attention, obedience, respect, and self-control

Home Days

(Tuesdays and Thursdays)

Home Days for kindergartners are designed to be a time of enjoyment for mothers with their children, not a stress. We primarily ask you to spend time doing an easy reading lesson from a book that is scripted and easy to follow. Each week we also send home Secret Book Packs—a Cedars’ favorite! These are large, colorful plastic envelopes filled with picture and early reader books chosen for your child’s grade level, which are sent home each week for enjoyment and reading practice. Students love having their very own Secret Book Pack with a variety of quality books to take home each week so they always have new, interesting books to enjoy. Keeping the academics light at this age is intentional and allows for plenty of time outdoors and playing independently.
